Birdie In Flight: The Science of Badminton

The badminton birdie many Americans hit around their backyards can fly faster than 200mph in professional games! The key to the birdie’s speed is its unique aerodynamic shape and materials combined with a complicated kinetic chain of movements by players.

Thanks Doctor, and I'm drinking a "Mac's, Green Beret IPA" beer at an optimal 71 deg angle. Soooo good!
No credits for Dr. Chu??
This game dope af
I was hoping for more information in this video.
They should have shown the vid of professionals playing, not just some random recreation dude.
Badminton was fun and dangerous !

@4:19 I'd rather make you Hold my beer
Most Americans only know the outdoor recreational grade of Badminton. Indoors is where the real competitive sport is played. Unbelievable speeds, control, touch and power are on display. At the 2005 World Championships in Anaheim, many got to see it live and refused to believe their eyes. In fact people refused to get up for a bathroom break during a match or go to the bathroom. I know some people made runs for them to get food and got paid. They did this every single day that weeklong event was in session and made enough money to buy equipment that went on sale during the last two days. Vendors in the arena were selling out of a lot of stuff at 50% discounts and people got extremely great buys. Hopefully they're using all that they cleaned out and most importantly beginning to play indoors to maximize their new found love of the sport they'd been so lucky to see at the worlds top level. Big stars were there readily signing autographs on shirts, racket covers, shoes (Badminton) sneakers and posing for selfies etc. with the major 0lympic level masters of the sport. That was a rare opportunity for many and I'm not sure when the next time the Badminton World Championships will take place in the US. Whenever that is I'll make it a point to be there. Keep in mind that 260 mph was the top recorded speed for a smash or kill shot soon after and now the Guinness World record stands at a mind numbing and blistering speed of 306 mph. That is 493 mph in metric.Check it out! Cheers! What an absolutely incredible sport.

SCIENCE¬! :D:D
Slowest sport is probably bowling bowlers speed averages between 18-21 mph
4:00 I am no pro badminton player, but that is not the proper way to start a jump smash. You have to raise your racket before you jump not raise it while your ascending.
There are like a thousand factors to producing a fast smash.
temperature will affect the bad mittens
Pretty sure not many americans play this game..
ba bum bum bum!!!
This doctor is the Iron Man of badminton lol
interesting !!
That's make sense. In the latter 20% of the smash shuttle slowed down in full length court, so if I want an almost unreturnable smash a good angle(around 72 degree) will cut the 20% slower phase of the shuttle flight by hitting the floor before it start to slow down and easier to retrieve.
2:45 Dr. Chu is a National Level Badminton… umpire. LOL
I don't believe the claim made in this video. Ability to generate fast racquet speed also play a major role in generating maximum shuttlecock speed. It is wrong to say optimum hitting angle 71.6 degree is all to maximizing shuttlecock speed and it can be achieve by doing jumpsmash. One can hit shuttlecock at 71.6 degree without jumping. Look at women player, they rarely do jumpsmashing, are professional woman player hitting the shuttlecock wrong?? Making contact point at the racquet sweet spot also add to the optimum shuttlecock speed.
Shuttlecock.
Great sport !
I am inside this video! 🙂
No useful practice
all this time i thought jai alai was the fastest, but just found out it's only 188mph. Golf broke that record at 204mph. so how fast is badminton?
