Do you need to Go to design or art school to be a designer? My answer is an emphatic no! This is not to say that design school is a bad thing, but if you don’t have the money for the formal education that should not hold you back from starting a career in design.
In this VLOG I go over what really matters when trying to work in the industry. Whether it’s graphic design, web design, product design, or any other form of design, I know you can make your way with nothing more than the desire to succeed

Thank you for the information. I saw this video just at the right time!
College students learn more than people who don’t do to college period
Your education shows up on your background checks though.
hey Jesse currently i am looking for a career change watching your video encourage me . I was about to invest 3,000 on a certificate course on graphic design, now my question is it better to self taught if you don't have any experience or is better to have someone teach you .
Thank you, inspiring words!
Ok, let's be real. You already told the perspective employer you have a degree or not when you sent in your resume or filled out the online application, before you even get the interview. Some to most jobs require you have a degree or training and they tell you that on the job listing. Now, I say that to say this. You are right if your skills are what they need with or without a degree, you can get certain jobs. But as a fashion designer, my experience is that a degree ( or lack of one ) with your background and your actual skills the are demonstrable by portfolio, photos or actual goods in hand are key to getting a job. So I agree that knowledge and know how can get you a job without a degree, but some employers do require
a degree. Also, I have seen in instances where the employee does not have a degree, they can be under utilized, or taken for granted or worse ( that is a testament to how nasty fashion is). Lastly sometimes it's not what you know but who you know. But good luck to all and get those skills up!
Does it really worth to be a graphic designer…
I really love this field but I am afraid about choosing it as my career
Switching from a science related masters degree into graphic design must've been the most idiotic thing I have ever done.
Awesome content ! keep up a good work ! but i need to notice bad margin on that picture on the wall behind you sorry 😀
Omg you’re helping me so much on taking decision. Thank you for the advice :>
I am currently in the AC field but have been running creative side hustles for close to 10 years. I just recently started taking udemy courses and was thinking I might need to go back to school if i want a real shot at switching my career paths. This video put things in perspective. Thank you!
YES. YES. YES! Students in general need to hear more of this. Might not be applicable to every student, but this method of learning and building yourself up is exactly what I needed to hear about at the end of my senior year of high school.
This so cool 😭
I see college today as nothing more than a place to network and build connections. The education however can be acquired anywhere at anytime.
I like your suggestion in terms of design knowledge perspective. But what about the social part? I personally think that going to college is a good place to meet and work with top people as well as building a relationship with them in an industry, like professors. Also, it's good to learn how they think, what makes them become the top. Secondly, being their students can communicate with them and ask questions as many as we want. It's not easy to get a nice mentor outside of school. But going to college seems more possible to achieve this. But just personal opinion. I would love to hear how you handle this.
it's not $30,000 when you take away taxes, work-related expenses, living expenses and then hope you have enough to pay that college bill back. I went to community college for my associates and then went to a public state college for my CS degree and saved so much money.
Very true. I have $25-30k student loan debt, and everything I've learned in my 12+ years as a graphic designer was from actually doing the work and learning from my jobs.
Design schools in my country are literally 200-400$ a semester. Too bad they aren't internationally recognized
I am so thankful that I landed upon this great video. You just gave me hope. I know nothing about graphic design, and i wanted to learn badly..for a living. Hope to find video tutorials on your channel. God bless!
"Character really matters"
You transmit confidence
And finally I'm sure and don't need any art school
Great vid man!
Totally subscribed 💯
I'm nearly 40 and being a graphic designer has been a dream of mine since I was in my early-20s, but being a mom and working full-time made it impossible for me to go to college. Now that my child is an adult I looked into getting my BA and it was going to be about $50,000 in student loans. This video gives me hope and I'm grateful to you for that!
Thanks mann… My mind blown up after i watch this 😭🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Oh how am so relieved to find this. Thank you so much ❤️
great video! the ending is on point!
Design university exists not to make people get a job, but to build a community. If you had a chance, just go…
I am a single mom of 2 at the age of 26, ( I got married young) went through a real bad divorce that set me back 4yrs. I only have a high school degree, I used to be an actress on PBS kids but stopped that due to having to raise a family. I have a entire different perspective on life now and im ready to get the ball rolling again. I am currently in college at Full Sail online and what your saying in the video has some really good points but this is just not practical for someone like me. Graphic Design for me would just be a really great day job while focusing on other passions and dreams. I am lookin on Indeed and Glassdoor and pretty much every job out there with big corporate status needs you to have a Degree. Since I can only find minimal wage jobs to support my family. Getting a degree would be better than trying to learn on my own, while still having to pay for tools and supplies and web seminars with no str8 forward guidance. Yes I won't have debt but id be taking a huge risk doing everything on my own. I watched another video of yours and you stated you learned a skill by going to college. Those same skills may not be out there for someone like me.YES one could be debt free but one could also be wasting alot of time learning the wrong things.
Great vid..love your honesty on this subj. Btw that's not Tina Turner..it's Janet Jackson lol Now u can sleep better at night. You're welcome 🙂
Packed with value! Keep doing your thing Jesse…
dude your energy is amazing, definitely inspiring, so happy to have found your channel!
Thanks for that! I dropped out of design school this week because I already have my business and wanted to spend my time growing it instead of spending hours studying (and money, too). I feel so much better after watching your video!
Yo turn down the music in the background, hella distracting!…
Totally agree with you. Sometimes the teachers in the academy/design school are not even good enough graphic designers to be teaching.
I’ve been struggling with this decision, so this was such a help!
Thanks for all the resources in the description.
I love this video my guy, thank you
So inspiring, I’ve always wanted to be a designer and felt like I needed to go to school in order to follow my dreams. Your tips have really inspired me to do it on my own and make it happen, THANK YOU 😊
in my experience paying for an education in design or art or some practical area usually isn't the greatest value. you obvious gain stuff from it and potientially expediate your growth as an artist but it's not nessecary.
Thanks for the info. I always wondered if I have a chance in the the multimedia industry with only a Associates degree. I have the skills, just my degree doesn't let me apply for it. So, all there is to just have a strong portfolio, skills, and loyalty to give when applying for a field?
Do you think if you can't vision your firm in the future based on you current career you are not on the right track?
Thank you so much for the video! I just graduated from a diploma in graphic design and having a hard time looking for a job, I am self-doubt maybe I should go back to school to study the degree. But after seeing your video, I realized the problem is not a degree, but my portfolio. Be responsible to myself, keep learning and building up my portfolio is what I need to do now!!!
hey bro – thank you so much for this video <3 valuable information. appreciate you! 🙂 new subscriber
All I'm wondering while watching this video is if he went to college or not. It sounds like he did. Anybody knows?
I went to school for business management. Took a class in photography just to get an easy credit. Ended up doing photo work on the side while learning about business. In the end, I was making way more in photography then business management. Slowing started getting gigs for design work because of knowing Adobe so well. I am just wanting to learn more about it now and take it more seriously.
Jesse, you make a valid point about most of these school traps. You have to do research and make a decision to pick a design school to where when you graduate, you are a sound designer and thinker. It is a craft and the more educated one can be, the more well rounded the solutions. There are schools who produce great designers. And thinkers.
I extremely agree with you, but if you/your family can afford college, then its just a + on your design skills
In summary:
1. Just start making stuff, craft et al. Just do it!
2. Start observing, create patterns in your mind to understand why things look good, and work. Or not.
3. Don't give up your day job. Hustle on the side and learn a new skill.
4. Read. Read. Read.
5. Online learning in design, in creativity – youtube, online learning platforms.
6. Self-discipline. Develop a strong work ethic. Be self-motivated.
Great stuff!
