I enjoy cycling and getting off the beaten path, so it’s a no-brainer to join Uncharted Horizons’ cycling tour of Yangon countryside once I found out about it. This tour is a great way to see the local village life just outside of Yangon and get some exercise at the same time. You’ll be given an English speaking guide and a well maintained mountain bike with good suspension, and then you’ll be on your way! Cycle to the Yangon river and take a short ferry amongst the locals across to the town of Dala, full of fisherman, farmers and some of the happiest children you’ll ever see (seriously we are like tourist attractions to them). Visit a local market, watch villages play a heated game of football and cross rivers on a longboat (yes with your bike), there’s so much to see in this town!
Uncharted Horizons is a licensed tour operator based in downtown Yangon specialising in cycling tours, trekking and other adventure tours across Myanmar. I had the privilege of meeting the founder Jochen, who is originally from Austria, and the local Burmese guides he employs. I did the Islands and Rivers half day cycling tour which I thought was excellent value at 44,000 kyats, or about 40 AUD and includes everything from the bike, guides, all forms of transport and all snacks and drinks. I honestly had a great time and would recommend this to anyone, just do the morning session if you can – it will be cooler and there’ll be more activity in the villages!
If you’re ever in Yangon with half a day to spare, get in contact with Jochen from Uncharted Horizon and you won’t regret it! Tell him I said hi
For full disclosure, I was fully prepared to pay for the tour but Jochen offered it for free at the end of the tour. After some haggling I convinced him to accept a 50% discount! However this has in no way influenced my opinion at all – the tour is totally worth it at full price!
